DSP Q&A: Slips, trips and falls

As a DSP owner, prioritizing the safety of your employees, fleet and business is crucial. Here are some quick tips to share with your employees for maintaining a safe working environment.

Tips to prevent slips, trips and falls

Keep walkways clear

  • Practice good housekeeping by cleaning common areas and vehicles.
  • Clear away debris and remove items that can cause trips, such as boxes and materials in walkways.
  • Hide cables, extension cords and wires.
  • Advise employees to slow down, be careful and take their time when moving around the station and unloading and loading vehicles.

Ensure adequate lighting

  • Dimly lit walkways increase the risk of trips and falls. Regularly check light bulbs in high-volume areas once a month and in lower-volume areas and vehicles twice a year.

  • Notify a station manager if a light bulb is not working.

Implement ongoing safety huddles & best practices

  • Set aside one day each week to review the station's common areas and vehicles.
  • Clean common areas and vehicles, clear away debris and remove items that can cause trips.
  • Identify potential hazards.
  • Review and ensure cleaning supplies are properly stocked and that refuge bins have been properly discarded for reuse.

Wear proper footwear

  • Recommend employees wear non-slip shoes for better traction and to avoid falls. Discourage wearing sandals, open-toed shoes and high heels.

Promptly clean spills

  • Spills are common fall hazards. Clean them immediately to prevent slips and trips. Mop, sweep, or dry any substances on the floor that could cause someone to slip.

By following these tips, you can help ensure the safety of your employees, fleet and overall business.
