Setting up cover

You'll have access to dedicated insurance advisers who understand the business requirements of DSPs and are ready to assist with your insurance needs.

If you are a new DSP, Marsh will contact you to discuss setting up your cover. However, feel free to contact us in the meantime should you wish.

If you are an existing DSP with cover elsewhere, and you’d like to obtain a quote, please start the application on this website.

Marsh has dedicated insurance advisers ready to answer your questions – and assist with obtaining a quote. Our goal is to make it easy for you to start the process, when you’re ready! The programme is available to all DSPs operating locations nationwide.

In addition to the general business information such as business address, payroll, turnover and details of vehicles, we would require the last five years’ claims history (or all the years your business has been trading if fewer).

If you have any questions on how to obtain your claims history from your current insurance provider, please call 0330 912 5023 or email  UKDSP@marsh.com and our expert team will advise you accordingly.

We will provide you with a quote within five business days of receipt of your fully completed application (subject to underwriting eligibility). We will contact you if more time or information is needed.

Here at Marsh we want to make arranging your insurance simple, therefore our quote will provide you with an annual price per vehicle based on your claims experience. When you need to add or remove vehicles mid-way through the policy, we will amend the price according to the months you have left on the policy. For full information, please contact us on 0330 912 5023

You can contact the dedicated DSP insurance advisers by telephone or email to confirm you wish to go ahead with the quotation. This should be done at your earliest opportunity to avoid your fleet being grounded. If not already on file, Marsh will contact you to obtain your payment details.

Once cover has been accepted, you will receive an insurance certificate along with your full policy wordings within five business days. If your vehicles have been leased via LeasePlan, we will also confirm cover to them to avoid your vehicles being grounded.

Once cover has been accepted and the policy number issued, if the vehicle is leased via LeasePlan they will update the vehicle on your behalf. If the vehicle is not a LeasePlan vehicle it is your responsibility to update the MID. If this cannot be done please contact us via telephone or email and we will arrange for your insurers to update the MID on your behalf. Unfortunately Marsh is not permitted to update the MID for you.

Please note that it can take up to seven working days for the MID to show your vehicle once the request has been sent to them.

Yes, the programme will cover your owned, leased, and rented vehicles. You must report any vehicles you wish to be included in the programme directly to Marsh so that cover can be arranged. Marsh will then confirm with you any insurance premium changes.

Employers liability

Under the Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969 and 2008 amendment, all organisations that employ staff or contractors on a labour only basis are required by law to have employers liability insurance.

If you employ staff or contractors on a labour only basis, you’re legally required to have employers liability insurance in place. You have a responsibility for ensuring that the individuals performing work for you are safe and well. Despite your best efforts, if one of the individuals working for you suffers an injury or becomes ill and believes it’s your fault, they may try to claim compensation from you.

You need employers liability cover in place from the day your business starts engaging drivers. Regardless of whether these drivers are paid or not, you are at risk of legal action from them. To qualify as a member of a driver, a person does not have to be paid or under contract with you; it includes anyone you have a legal duty of care over. So, even sole traders may need employers liability insurance.

The Employers Liability definition extends further than persons directly employed under a contact of service, it includes anyone of the following that could be deemed to be operating within your business on your behalf:

  • Full-time employees
  • Part-time employees
  • Directors
  • Voluntary workers
  • Seasonal workers
  • Contract workers
  • Labour-only sub-contractors
  • Students or work placements

Employers liability insurance prices are calculated based on actual payments paid by the business during the annual policy period. Payments must be reported by industry class code, which is used to categorise the responsibilities of individuals working for you.

For your business, there are two primary categories:

  1. Delivery operations which includes all individuals working for you operating vehicles and/or making deliveries. This may include owners and managers of the business if they are involved in the delivery operations.
  2. Clerical includes bookkeepers, accountants, secretaries, and general office individuals working for you.

As a starting point, use the number of routes your business will manage, how many drivers you will have per route, and expected weekly pay per driver on that route.

For illustrative purposes only:

Your business has 5 routes. You plan on using 2 drivers per route at £15 an hour. You expect to pay each driver £825 per week.

£825 x 2 (drivers on each route) x 5 number of routes = £8,250 in weekly driver payments.

£8,250 x 52 = £429,000 in annual payment for drivers and helpers.

Your business may also have clerical and owner payments to consider when reporting.

It is important you report your projected driver(s)' payments accurately as under or over reporting can affect your insurance policy.

Since new drivers are not included in your initial business's projected annual driver payments, it is important you contact Marsh so that we can update your insurance cover. You can contact us either by telephone on 0330 912 5023 or email UKDSP@marsh.com.

Employers liability insurance generally includes the following types of pay in determining driver payments for premium purposes:

  • Employee payments and salaries (including pay for holidays or sickness)
  • Executive officer payments (minimum/maximum rules apply)
  • Commissions and bonuses
  • Extra pay for overtime
  • Payments paid for time not worked or idle time
  • Employers’ payments on behalf of the driver to incentive plans and profit-sharing plans.

Claims

Both of carriers have leading claims teams who will handle all aspects of your vehicle claims including claim reporting, vehicle recovery, repair and replacement. Alternatively you can contact our team here at Marsh on 0330 912 5023.

Either contact your insurer directly (24 hour telephone number will be within your documents) or contact us here at Marsh.

In the event of an incident your insurer will arrange for your vehicle to be collected and taken to one of their aprroved repairers.

All new claim notifications should be sent to us here at Marsh and we will arrange for the relevant team member to contact you.

In order to assist in the claims-handling process it would be greatly appreciated for the DSP to adhere to the following guidelines for employers liability and public liability claims.

Accidents involving the following categories of loss/injury to be notified to the insurer within one working day:

  • Fatalities
  • Amputations
  • Multiple fractures and/or severe burns that result in hospitalisation for more than 24 hours
  • Any accidents involving more than one person and severe head injuries
  • Any accident likely to involve damage to third party property in excess of £250,000 ‒ this will assist us in determining whether a claims inspector will be required.

Letters of claim received by the DSP from a third party should be forwarded to us as soon as possible so they can comply with the requirements of the pre-action protocol for personal injury claims.
