Motor accident checklist: Your checklist for motor claims

In the event of an accident involving a company car or vehicle, please ensure that all drivers take the actions below.

If the accident occurred on the motorway or someone has been injured, the police should be called immediately.

Actions at the accident scene:

  • Take a few deep breaths
  • Put on your hazard lights
  • Any vehicles or cars involved should move away from main traffic routes, if possible, and make sure your vehicle is parked
  • Attend to any personal injury if possible, and call and ambulance if needed
  • Swap insurance information, and take down any other pertinent details.

Information to record

When a road traffic accident or car accident occurs, the following information about the people and vehicles involved needs to be recorded:

  • Driver's name
  • The make and model of the vehicle or car involved
  • The vehicle or car registration number
  • The time and date of the incident
  • The name of the other driver (the third party)
  • The third party’s address and phone number
  • The third party’s vehicle make and model and registration number
  • The other driver's insurance details
  • Details of any passengers
  • Details of any injuries
  • Details of any witnesses
  • The location of the incident including any telematics data you hold
  • Photos of damage to your own vehicle and third-party damage.

Please notify your insurance company immediately, quoting the insurance policy number.

Drivers must ensure they provide factual and accurate information. Failure to do so could mean insurers refuse to deal with the claim and the driver is taken off the cover.

The insurers will send an email or letter acknowledging the claim with a summary of the information provided.

Do not admit liability or offer money to any person, known as a “third party,” involved in the incident.
