As a DSP owner, it is important to create a safety-first culture for your business in order to keep your employees, business and fleet up and running at full capacity.
We have compiled a few points for you to keep in mind while training your employees and operating your business.
Practice safe driving behavior: As simple as it sounds, reinforcing safe driving practices for your employees, before, during and after their route, is crucial for safety to become the norm for your organization.
What does safe driving behavior look like?
- Help your drivers to “plan ahead” to reduce the risk of an accident while they are out delivering on their route. Make sure your drivers know their route, are aware of their surroundings, take a daily inspection of their vehicle to ensure all safety precautions are in place and review local weather reports to ensure your fleet is prepared for any rain, snow or other weather that could impact driving conditions.
- Safe driving behavior can be as easy as a few checks before drivers leave for their route. For example: checking mirror placement, removing personal device(s) from view to avoid distractions while driving, securing cargo and once you are ready to leave, be sure you have your seatbelt on!
What can you do as a DSP owner?
- We recommend having a supervisor preform a pre-trip inspection before any vehicle in your fleet starts its daily journey. Document any items you think could potentially cause long-term issues and address any maintenance concerns right away.
- To reduce the risk of mishaps, and prolong the life of your fleet, be sure to pay extra attention to tire and windshield wiper wear, as well as any fluids needed in order to keep your vehicles in top working order.
Prepare your drivers and fleet in case of an emergency
We encourage DSP owners to take the time to reinforce the importance of safety for their employees, fleet and overall business. Take a few minutes each day or once a week to review common safety tips with your employees to reduce the risk of accidents on the road or in the station before or after they get back from their route.
- Ensure employees know what can lead to common workplace injuries such a slips, trips and falls
- Review the top claims by Amazon DSPs and tips on how to avoid them
- Provide access to the appropriate documents for your drivers while out on the road.
- Ensure you have the following documents on hand, printed and accessible for your drivers in the event of an accident while out on the road:
- Proof of insurance
- Fleet Auto ID card
- Proof of registration
- Don't forget, we have created a few accident checklists and resources that can be referenced in the event of an accident or claim. We recommend printing these out and having them for your drivers to reference.
- In the event of an accident, remind your employees to take photos and/or videos of the scene, as well as request a copy of a police report if there is one.
