Prepare for peak season

To ensure your business is prepared - review our checklist below.

As we approach another peak season, advanced screening and hiring becomes more frequent in anticipation of added volume. Even though this process happens all year long, it will likely take more of your time and attention. You feel pressure to obtain and retain the correct staffing levels, so we’ve compiled some tips to keep your business prepared. Review 8 tips our team of dedicated insurance professional compiled below to help you prepare.

1. Review your handbook and set minimum qualification standards for each position you employ.

  • Driving experience (e.g. tenure, violations, accidents, equipment operated, etc)
  • Mechanic experience (e.g. type of equipment used, tenure, certifications, etc)
  • Training requirements (e.g. mandatory safety meetings, training, etc)

2. Whether you use social media or a recruiting firm, be sure to respond to all leads quickly.

  • Potential employees want a responsive employer.

3. If an applicant calls, be sure to answer.

  • Many people hang up rather than leave voicemail.

4. Have a set list of questions to ask.

  • Get to know applicants to show you care; create a conversation to learn more about why they are interested in the role.

5. Share benefits to working for your company.

  • How can you meet their needs?
  • What exciting things do you offer that other companies may not?
  • Explain any career development opportunities they may be able to take advantage of.

6. Identify acceptance and next steps based on the initial conversation if appropriate.

  • Be sure to outline what the timeline is so nothing falls through the cracks.
  • Clearly identify who will be owning next steps - are their things you as the business owner will be sending or does the applicant need to take the lead.

7. Ensure your management team is involved and aware that an applicant/new hire is starting.

  • Make other team members aware of interview dates, start dates and any onboarding materials that will be needed on the employees first day.

8. Once qualifications are met and the new employee has started, set expectations early on for performance and safety.

  • Behavior is important during screening and we recommend reinforcing it throughout their tenure at your organization.
